How We Gave Our Parents Years Of Living At Home With A Stair Chair Lift
For quite some time I've observed my parents mobility slowly deteriorate as age set in and the rigours of a hard life on the farm started to catch up. Most frustrating was the realization that they'd have to shortly leave their beloved two story farmhouse, as they were unable to safely navigate the stairs to the upstairs bedrooms. However, a friend suggested we look at installing one of those stair chair lifts, or even wheelchair stair lifts to enable them a few more years at home.
We knew nothing about stair lift chairs, or handicap chair lifts as they are sometimes known, so we really were starting our research afresh. Luckily, we're adept at using the Internet so a quick Bing search for "handicap chair lift" returned a wealth of information on all types of stairlifts, with access to many stairlift companies, such as Ameriglide, Brooks, Bruno, Ada, Acorn just to name a few.
We realized the folks needs were going to be a little different than normal, as their house is old and large with a grand old staircase that'd likely require a curved stair lift and this would probably be fairly expensive to acquire & install, so we considered looking for a used stair lift and were quite surprised with what we found available.
It seems any residential lift actually has a finite life, as the users are generally elderly & a sad fact is these people eventually pass on, and then you have a house with some type of vertical platform lift installed and no one left to use it. As such, there is actually a fairly vibrant used market, as many people buying these homes immediately remove the lift and put it up for sale, and generally they have no idea of stair-lift prices, so there are some pretty amazing deals to be found. Unfortunately because of the unique requirements we were faced with, and being in a rural area, we never did find a suitable used lift, but did find a new model from Ameriglide, that came with very thorough installation instructions, simple enough that the local handyman had no problems setting it up. I must say it's nice to see the folks enjoying what looks like many years in their home, thanks to our family's decision to look for one of the many stair chair lifts available. |
